Sheraton Chapel Hill (Hotel Europa) review
Wednesday, February 24th, 2010Review taken down by phone from a prospective bride:

Sheraton Chapel Hill (Hotel Europa) foyer & front desk

Hotel Europa ballroom (Chapel Hill Sheraton)
“The hotel is located off 15-501 business quite near Chapel Hill; the traffic in that area is horrible now. There is a new super-roundabout thing that was supposed to improve the situation but actually I think it’s made it worse; I often go out of my way to avoid this area.
“I had a meal there recently; it was only so-so in my opinion. It’s not very nice outside, but you don’t hear the traffic noise when you get inside…
“Wedding packages, including chairs, tables, linens, food, punch, etc. are are $50-$89 per person – that includes a night for the bride and groom with champagne, chocolate covered strawberries, and breakfast. There are a lot of upgrade options including more expensive liquor.”

Carolina Inn Old Well Room for wedding reception
A lot of people have asked if I know how much it costs to have a wedding ceremony or wedding reception at the Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill. I investigated this when my daughter was looking for venues and below you see what I found out. I got the information from Ashleigh Collins; she is Social Catering Manager at the Carolina Inn; for more information, contact her at phone number 919-918-2766 or email her at acollins@carolinainn.com. The address: The Carolina Inn, 211 Pittsboro Street, Chapel Hill, NC 27516.
The Carolina Inn has got a wide range of room sizes. They can accommodate as many as 500 if the guests don’t have to sit down! The Hill Grand Ballroom (below) can seat 220 for dinner.

The Carolina Inn doesn’t charge for the rooms – there is no room rental fee per se. What they do instead is charge by the person/guest, and there are minimums. They book wedding receptions in two timeframes: afternoon (12-5pm) and evening (7pm-12am). The prices you see below include food, open bar for 3-4 hours, tax, service charge and labor. Obviously, you can’t bring your own caterer or do your own rentals. Their food is good.

Range of prices for wedding receptions at the Carolina Inn
You notice how there are three prices for each package? You can save money by booking in less popular months, less popular days. Here’s the breakdown:
- Package 1 is the most expensive and includes the most popular times: April, May, June, September, October, December, and the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend.
- Package II: March, July, August, November, and the Saturday and Sunday of Labor Day weekend.
- Package III, the most economical: January, February, Fridays and Sundays, some holidays, graduation weekend, and football weekends.
Ashleigh wrote:
Our Food & Beverage Minimums vary throughout the year (based on demand), and vary based on the venue. The venue will need to accommodate your guests based on how many there are, and if you would like a plated/seated dinner, or a heavy reception style (these both require different amounts of space for setup).
If all the math is overwhelming, you can get an idea of what this will cost you by looking at these examples of rates at different times. The cost differential is based on the Package I, II, III as above.
Plated Luncheon Packages: Cardinal, Emerald ($77 – $92 per person)
Heavy Hors d’Oeuvres Luncheons: Tar Heel ($76 -$86 per person)
Mid-Afternoon Heavy Hors d’Oeuvres Packages: Carolina ($73 – $77 per person)
Plated Dinner Packages: Azalea, Pine, Magnolia ($99 – $142)
Dinner Heavy Hors d’Oeuvres Receptions: Piedmont and Dogwood ($94 – $139)
You can also have your wedding ceremony at the Carolina Inn, inside in one of the ballrooms or outside in the small or large courtyard. (If you book the outdoor space, you must have made your own alternate arrangements in case of rain. And yes, it does rain sometimes.) The cost ranges from a minimum of $1,000 to a maximum of $2,000.
Courtyard fees are reduced by 25% if a tent is rented. All rental items must be arranged exclusively through your Carolina Inn wedding specialist.

Expensive but very tasty food and lovely rooms for weddings, receptions and parties at the Croasdaile Country Club
Thursday, October 22nd, 2009I recently had a very yummy lunch at the Croasdaile Country Club, and the room is absolutely lovely, bright and sunny (well, in the daytime anyway) and fresh looking. The service was excellent and the manager, John Sluck, goes out of his way to be pleasant and accommodating. He’s very efficient.
There are several rooms available for rehearsal dinners and receptions, and in fact you could have your wedding ceremony in one of the rooms while another was being prepared for the after-party! I believe it’s also possible to marry outside on their lovely grounds.
It used to be that only members of the Country Club could book the rooms there, but the rule has recently been relaxed. In view of the troubled economy and bridal party wishes to be frugal, room rental charges are waived under certain circumstances.
There’s plenty of parking and it’s easy to get to. You can contact Mr. Sluck at 919-383-1591 extension 239 to get his very comprehensive price and options package. Or email him at jsluck@croasdailecountryclub.com.

For wedding rehearsal dinner or reception or party: the new Torero’s Mexican restaurant, Durham NC
Monday, October 12th, 2009My daughter’s getting married at noon on a Sunday. She decided she wanted people to be able to get together the night before, as well, because out of towners will probably arrive on Saturday.
So she’s throwing a party for a hundred people at the new Torero’s location on Chapel Hill Boulevard, in Oak Creek Village shopping center on 15-501 business, across from Toyota. This is a big building that’s been empty for a long time and they’ve painted it – it looks grand now – and it’s all beautifully painted with rich, lively colors inside. There’s a back room with seating for about 80 or 100 people.
Here’s their catering menu. Ruben, the owner, is going to cordon off the back for us and serve a buffet of various Mexican foods: rice and beans, enchiladas, tacos, burritos, chips and salsa, etc. with soft drinks, tea, sangria, and beer. The buffet (not including alcohol) will be around $11 per person, and considering that we don’t have to pay extra for the room, this seems like a spectacular deal. He’s a great local vendor, well worth supporting. I eat at Toreros often and it feels like home.
Best catering in Raleigh Durham: Jazmin Mediterranean Bistro (Lebanese and Near Eastern food)
Monday, October 12th, 2009Now that my daughter has signed a contract with Nawwaf Said of Jazmin middle eastern restaurant and our day is secure, I’m willing to tell you: after all the weddings I’ve played at, I think the catering from Jazmin restaurant is the best in the Triangle. We met with Nawwaf today and now I’m impressed, not just with his great food, but with his professionalism, courtesy, and intelligence. He really has a handle on how the flow of guests and servers and rental agencies and food must work together for maximum efficiency – and fun.
My daugher’s getting married at Duke Gardens and they make new vendors jump through a lot of hoops to sign up, so we’re glad Nawwaf was willing to go through the process. Duke also has lists of approved rental people – there are no chairs or tables on site, we must rent them all – and Nawwaf is going to help us coordinate that.
We’re getting a very nice spread of Near Eastern food – pita and hummus and grape leaves and salads and lots of stuff including chicken and steak kebobs and felafel – and a range of soft drinks and teas etc. – with an appetizer course outside (to keep guests happy while pictures are being taken) and a buffet luncheon inside – for $28 per person. He will take care of hiring servers for us who will do set-up and break-down; we are going to provide the wine and beer but Nawwaf’s people will serve it. His people are going to cost $25/hour and it takes quite a few of them.
Anyway, I wanted to give this experience, so far, my heartiest recommendation. I first met Nawwaf when Mappamundi was playing at the wedding of a very picky bride. I told him at the time it was the best food I’d had at a wedding and asked, “Has the bride called you as often as she’s called me?” He smiled. He made her happy, so I’m sure he can make you happy too.
Jazmin now has two locations: 2430 Hillsborough Road in Raleigh, the food court in the Cary Towne Mall, and the one where we met him today, the newest, at 1624 Walnut Street in Cary, right at the highway exit. Go have a meal, you’ll like it!
Send your wedding vendor contract back late? Problems to resolve…
Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009Just a warning from personal experience – my daughter had selected the Mediterranean Deli in Chapel Hill as her wedding caterer. They had negotiated and all, and they sent her a contract, but she wasn’t completely satisfied because the contract was very vague, so she waited before sending it back to them, trying to decide how to feel more comfortable about it. (They had given her a “per person” price, but did not specify what items, exactly, would be provided at that price.)
By the time she sent it back, it turned out they had booked another wedding on her day (without telling her) so she is back to square one in the caterers’ department.
Don’t let it happen to you!

Interesting idea: $5000 wedding by “Events in a Box.”
Saturday, September 5th, 2009I was at a bridal vendors event lately and while I did not meet this vendor, the idea seems interesting:
Chantel Smith, “event coordinator,” is offering a flat-rate $5,000 package which includes:
A wedding designer
8-hour venue (A Step to Gold in Raleigh, Cambria Suites at RDU, or Duke Tower Hotel in Durham)
Cake and cake designer
Floral centerpieces
Massage therapist

Great Durham catering – Saladelia
Sunday, May 17th, 2009I eat at Saladelias a couple times a month – their food is fresh and beautiful and the people who work there are sweet and helpful. I’ve played at weddings catered by Saladelia and the food is just as good. Highly recommended! Here’s the Saladelia Catering menu.
“Super Taqueria” – Hard-core (but great) Mexican restaurant in Durham NC
Wednesday, May 13th, 2009Since I said Torero’s (see below) is on the gringo-friendly end of the spectrum of Mexican restaurants in the Triangle, I thought I’d put in a word for my current favorite on the other end – Super Taqueria on Roxboro Road.
I learned about it from a great local food blog, Carpe Durham. From their post about Super Taqueria:
Super Taqueria on Roxboro has everything one could ask for in a taqueria: salsa bar, licuado station, special weekend soups and ceviche, and a big screen TV playing Univision. The decor is also especially upscale when compared to Durham’s other taquerias, sporting a nice paint job and prints of vaguely Florentine landscapes.
We especially loved the gorditas de pollo. If you are rolling your eyes now, that is understandable; many taquerias fill their tacos and gorditas de pollo with limp chicken in a boring sauce. Not Super Taqueria; they cook little chopped bits of chicken on a grill so that they are caramelized and flavorful. Their gordita shells are also perfect–crispy on the very edges, chewy a little farther in, doughy in the very middle, and not greasy at all.
The people are friendly, there are wonderful salad things on the salsa bar, it’s inexpensive, and the steak in the tacos de asado is fabulously good. I don’t know if they cater but if they did, I’d press my daughter to choose them.
Torero’s Restaurant in Durham caters weddings and receptions
Wednesday, May 13th, 2009If you are visiting Spartacus (see previous post) to sample their catering menu, why not walk across the parking lot and try Torero’s Mexican restaurant?
I eat at Torero’s restaurant every week – the people are friendly, the food is tasty and the portions are generous. It’s not as hard-core as some of my other favorite Mexican restaurants, I don’t think you can order tongue or head tacos here, but that’s not what most non-Mexican brides are looking for, anyway…
They have a great looking truck they take to catering gigs.
Here is the Torero’s catering menu. The owner is friendly, attentive, and responsible.
Spartacus Restaurant in Durham: caters weddings
Wednesday, May 13th, 2009Here is the catering menu of Spartacus restaurant. My family loves Greek food and has patronized this restaurant for years.
Of their buffet items, I’m particularly fond of the Greek salad, the “Angel Hair Mediterranean,” the gyros with tsadziki (don’t miss the tsadziki), and the chicken. On the other hand, sadly, on our last two visits the spanakopita, which used to be wonderful, was sort of soggy and the pita was not completely fresh.
In general – you should be aware that caterers often resort to freezing – and sometimes re-freezing – their foods. Some foods can tolerate that and others can’t. There is a local kosher caterer who serves pita I would throw out if it were in my refrigerator, blegh! Perhaps you can specify something about this in your contract.

A wedding at the Celebrity Dairy in Siler City

Outdoors at the Celebrity Dairy in Siler City

Baby goat at Celebrity Daily
We did a unexpectedly lovely wedding at the Celebrity Goat Farm in Pittsboro (to your right, an actual Celebrity Goatlet, picture by Gerry). They didn’t tell us whether this was a celebrity farm for ordinary goats, or an ordinary farm for celebrity goats.Anyway, I would direct you to their website, but they don’t have one. [Now they do: The Inn at Celebrity Dairy.] They sell great (and very expensive) goat cheese and also hats that say “Celebrity Goat Farm” and you would be the only one on your block to own one.
The guy that owns the farm and the 60 goats has a nice B&B there (except there’s that smell of 60 goats) and is a GREAT cook and puts on weddings. The Inn at the Celebrity Dairy
We mostly do non-mainstream weddings, specializing in “More-or-less Traditional Music from the Northern Hemisphere and the Previous Millennium” as we do. (When we started it was the Current Millennium, but then Y2K happened and we had to order new business cards.) That means if somebody Scottish is marrying somebody Jewish, they can Google “Scottish Jewish Wedding” and our band will pop up on the screen.
So this was a Polish Russian wedding but they wanted medieval music for the prelude. Just our kind of gig. When we got there the bride and groom were sweeping the floor and setting up chairs but they soon disappeared and changed into their lovely garb. They had made their own outfits, sort of SCA-esque with flowing sleeves and wreaths, and the bridegroom had sewn himself a green velour Russian sort of tunic. It was a Unitarian Universalist ceremony, candles and stuff. A Unitarian minister once told me Unitarians don’t consider themselves Christians since they don’t believe in God, I hadn’t known that.
Afterwards we played oboreks and mazurkas and waltzes and everybody danced, young and old, mostly dances they were making up on the spot, and the food was absolutely wonderful. For once, instead of lurking in the back we sat at the banquet table with the bride and groom and their parents and got treated like royalty. At a goat farm. Isn’t life good?
A possible disadvantage is revealed in this quote from their publicity: “Just a few steps from the Inn you’ll find the ‘Goat Hilton’ – home to the Celebrity Goat Dairy herd of 100 Alpine and Saanen goats.” Depending on the wind…
The Inn at Celebrity Dairy in Siler City
Monday, April 20th, 2009I’ve played a few weddings there and I was absolutely blown away by the food. The buildings and the farm fields are lovely, too. It’s gotten very good reviews from online brides. My favorite wedding there was a Polish/Russian/Celtic/Renaissance affair – the bride and groom had sewn their own sort of medieval costumes and danced like crazy.
